In these lectures we will discuss the recent proof of a form of the multilinear Kakeya problem by Bennett, Tao and the lecturer.
We will begin with a discussion of the linear Kakeya and restriction problems. We will then indicate how the multilinear variants arise and discuss the relationships between them. We will prove a baby form of the inequality which is closely related to the Loomis-Whitney and Brascamp-Lieb inequalities, and which gives a quick proof of Beckner's sharp Young convolution inequality. Finally we will prove the inequality in its general form and give applications to multilinear restriction.
No previous knowledge of Kakeya/restriction phenomena is necessary.
